HPP Celebrates 2018 National Skilled Nursing Care Week®: Celebrating Life’s Stories
Baltimore, MD (May 14, 2018) — In skilled nursing care centers across the country, each person has a unique story to tell. That’s why Health Professions Press is excited that the theme of this year’s National Skilled Nursing Care Week® (NSNCW), formerly known as National Nursing Home Week, taking place from May 13 to 19, is “Celebrating Life’s Stories.”
Taking time to listen to how life’s most significant events, relationships, and experiences have shaped who others are today cultivates a shared sense of purpose and deeper understanding for both the narrator and the listener. The theme for the observance, “Celebrating Life’s Stories,” pays tribute to the diverse perspectives that residents, families, and staff bring to interactions every day in skilled nursing care centers and the surrounding communities.
Health Professions Press takes pride in better understanding residents’ stories by offering resources that guide staff in learning and using the life story to provide person-centered, individualized care. Whether it’s using a person’s life story to remind them about past successes, giving genuine compliments, or providing choices based on the person’s preferences, the life story leads us to success. Even just knowing one thing about a person opens up a world of conversation starters!
This year’s annual NSNCW observance recognizes the power of personal narratives and the role of skilled nursing care centers in caring for America’s seniors and individuals with disabilities. Each person in the long and post-acute care community contributes a distinct perspective that enriches the story of each center.
HPP’s books, care approaches, and Resource Center all celebrate the life story as a key component of person-centered care. Use these resources to discover, celebrate, and benefit from the experience and individuality of older adults.
