Stephen Weber Long

Stephen Weber Long, Ph.D., is a psychologist and psychoanalyst. He received a doctoral degree in clinical psychology from the California School of Professional Psychology in Berkeley/Alameda, California, and a postdoctoral diploma in psycho-analysis and psychotherapy from Adelphi University.

Beginning in 1992, Dr. Long was the Extended Care staff psychologist at the Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Northport, New York for 15 years. As staff psychologist, he served as a trainer to caregiving staff, counselor to patients and residents, and consultant to the medical center’s supervisors and administrators. Overlapping with his time in the Extended Care staff psychologist’s position at the Northport VA, Dr. Long maintained a private psychoanalytic practice, served as the president of the Adelphi Society for Psychoanalysis and Psychotherapy, and as an executive board member of the Postdoctoral Programs in Psychoanalysis and Psychotherapy at Adelphi University’s Gordon F. Derner Institute of Advanced Psychological Studies.

Since the publication of the first edition of Caring for People with Challenging Behaviors: Essential Skills and Successful Strategies in Long-Term Care, Dr. Long has continued the general practice of psychoanalytic psychotherapy, has provided staff training to extended-care facilities in the United States, and has continued in his role as a consultant to extended-care administrators and supervisors.
